About Us

The idea for Shelf-Sufficient started with our love of home grown vegetables. While there is debate regarding the nutritional value of home grown versus store bought, there is one big difference: pesticides! When you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you have the choice to go organic or to use pesticides. And if you do choose to use pesticides, you have the option to use organic or at least less harmful chemicals. And then there are other things to consider, like the benefits to the environment by recycling and composting your food waste to use the next season.

Then comes the next phase, prepping the food for long term storage. While this step can be time consuming and involve some labor, there is a great feeling of satisfaction in seeing a pantry full of your own food.  There is also a great sense of security knowing that you are prepared for unexpected times, such as natural disasters or loss of income. Or if you are like us, we also appreciate the ability to help others in their times of need or simply to give as a thoughtful gift.  Proper food storage techniques allow home grown foods to be kept long term, reducing the need to have store bought canned goods.  Canning, blanching/flash freezing, and dehydration are the three most common ways to store food long term.

The final step, cooking your wonderful fruits and vegetables. Our concept is tasteful simplicity. You have already put in a lot of time to plant, grow, harvest and prep the healthiest vegetables for storage, the last thing you want is a complicated recipe to follow. Your stored foods are already packed with natural flavors, all you need to do is add a few spices and cook it up. Our recipe kits include essential spices and guides on how to cook great tasting meals that are also healthy. Microwaving (due to the short cooking time/minimal nutrient destruction), boiling, steaming, poaching, broiling, grilling, and stir-frying are the healthiest ways to cook. While not as healthy, baking and crock-pots can be two of the easiest ways to cook.
